March Matters: Jan's Question

My question is when you buy clothes do you choose them based on Eric's preferences or yours? Do you wear things even if you know he wouldn't like them?

Amy: I guess I feel like a very lucky girl because Eric loves variety. He calls me his "wash and wear girl" and I believe him when he says he likes anything and everything I'm in; regardless of style. However, the universe does require balance so of course, the topic of clothing has not been a complete bed of roses.  Eric is happy regardless of what I choose to put on but we did not see eye-to-eye when it came to what to wear in bed.  I grew up in the snow with a family who could only afford a certain number of days of heat each winter. When the propane was out, so was the heater. I learned to sleep in cozy flannel jammies with soft fluffy socks and a pair of long johns underneath.  When we first started dating, Eric would make comments about sleeping in the nude and I couldn't imagine such a thing!  It took a long time for me to become comfortable going to bed with nothing on. "What if there is an emergency?" I'd ask. "What if someone comes to the door?" I would inquire.  It's still something I wrestle with just because it's not what I know.  So, when Eric is home, I sleep with his body wrapped around mine and make sure I've got at least a sheet to cover up with, even in the hottest of summer nights. When Eric travels for work, though, I'm in his t-shirt with a pair of extra long pink flannels, my bunny slippers, and hooded pj top!

Eric: Amy doesn't wear anything I don't like but I think when Amy picks things out, she has me in mind. Likewise, when I travel, I sometimes see dresses and things that make me think how pretty she'd be wearing them.

  1. Amy, I am with you on the flannels in the winter. Grew up in Chicago. I thought Eric's input was just the frosting on this post. Thank him for us!

    1. Hello Flannel Ella!
Eric has agreed to give his input on any and all questions posed to us this month. He's on the road again soon so he's putting in the extra effort to really spend some time together.

    1. Hi Jan,
If your feet are cold enough for socks in bed, your fella is probably grateful that you aren't bringing them naked between the sheets. ;)

  3. I am similar with you on the pj thing. Barney often works well past when I go to bed. I don't like feeling vulnerable (naked) when he isn't around. He has taken all of my flannel pj bottoms though. I have to ask for them if I want to wear them and I better have a good reason.LOL. I now wear flannel nightshirts in the winter or little nighties in the summer. Trust me that took a LOT of getting used to. I still find myself pulling them down, or unwinding myself from their sausage like vice ( I might move around a bit in my sleep). There are times however that I am instructed to not wear anything to bed, even if he is not home. Those times my short housecoat (also flannel- hey I live in Canada, heat or not it is a mental thing) is right by my side! LOL.

Happy to hear I am not alone in the 'sometimes yes, sometimes no' department.

    1. Ok Willie, You so totally get what I'm talking about. And the nightgown/night shirt thing - can't do it. Apparently I do a few acrobatics in my sleep as well. I get all tangled up and am surely at risk of strangling myself. Give me some long flannel bottoms and a tank top and I feel safe and warm. I can do naked when Eric is home but you're right, when he travels, I'm way too uneasy without my pjs.

  4. Amy loved you answer and it was wonderful Eric added his bit to it also. It does take a bit to get used sleeping in the nude after growing up being told to sleep with so much on. Good for you doing it for Eric.

    1. Hi Lindy,
Yep, I do it for Eric. He's got a funny story about me being naked in front of him. The first time he ever saw me completely naked, I was so nervous I vacuumed the whole house from top to bottom. Yes, naked. I needed the distraction. And yes, he just watched, wondering what a silly girl he was falling for. Now he claims I'm too comfortable being naked because I never vacuum anymore. LOL

  5. Amy,

How much would I need to pay you to see a photo of you in your pink flannels and bunny slippers?

  6. This was a great question and I loved your answer Amy.

It took me a while to get used to sleeping nude too. Rick likes whatever I choose, but I do tend to choose with him in mind.

  7. Funny how we discover how much we share...naked was not something I was comfortable with...for a few reasons...M knew it was a big hurdle for me,so we took it slowly. Still now tho...my flannel pj's are close by during the long winter months. hugs abby
